However, not enough information is collected by a single pinhole camera to infer information on the axial position of a source. To understand this, let us assume for clarity that the pinhole is infinitesimally small. In this case, the acceptance range for incoming rays is reduced to a single ray from each source point. To triangulate the axial position of a source, however, the direction of propagation of two different rays emanating from the same source would be required. Unlike a camera with a focusing lens, an ideal pinhole camera does not even allow for axial optical sectioning by focusing one specific plane and blurring all others. To recover sufficient angular information for depth resolution, at least two pinhole perspectives would be required. This is in principle possible by exposing a single camera at several different positions, or by using several cameras in parallel. However, since pinhole cameras gather only a small fraction of the light that reaches the pinhole plane, this approach is too inefficient for practical purposes. In contrast to a pinhole camera, a photographic camera with a focusing lens collects rays from a range of angles for each source point and thus is capable of capturing more light than a pinhole camera.
